Inositol – Second Messenger for the Brain
Inositol is a direct precursor of phospholipids which are a major component of cellular membranes. It helps to maintain proper electrical energy and nutrient transfer across the cell membrane. As a component of lecithin, Inositol helps to prevent high cholesterol and the hardening of the arteries caused by cholesterol buildup. DMAE is a short for dimethylaminoethanol, a naturally occurring substance that facilitates the synthesis of a neurotransmitter acetylcholine. DMAE also may stimulate the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, an important component of cell membranes. Interestingly, DMAE is far better known and researched as a "smart drug” although it is a natural compound. In a number of studies, DMAE has been shown to reduce age-related decline in cognitive ability and memory. It was also found to modestly increase life span of laboratory animals. An intriguing finding in some DMAE studies was that it reduced the accumulation of lipofuscin deposits inside cells.
Lipofuscin is a cellular pigment consisting of aggregated chunks of molecular waste. It tends to occur in the cells of older people. It is likely that lipofuscin is not simply a byproduct of aging but also contributes to the aging process. Neurons, heart and skin of older people usually contain particularly large amounts of lipofiscin.

Green Tea is one of the most if not the most studied micro-nutrients in history but few people associate Green Tea Extract with brain health; however, it has incredible benefits and a brain supplement that did not incorporate it would be incomplete.
Take polyphenols, for instance. These phyto-chemicals, which give green tea its bitter taste, are powerful antioxidants that have been associated with preventing cancer and heart attacks. Recent research has also shown they may help maintain positive mood states and protect against Parkinson's disease and other brain disorders.
A study from the University of San Francisco found that the polyphenols in green tea can boost availability of the important brain substance dopamine in the areas where it's needed. Dopamine is a signaling substance in brain circuits that are crucial to creating positive mood states.
It is involved in transmitting signals of reward and motivation and in helping muscles move smoothly. Dopamine production goes awry in the brains of Parkinson's patients, leading to the muscle rigidity and tremors associated with the disorder.
Researchers in the study measured levels of dopamine in mice before treating some of them with polyphenols. They then injured the specific neurons linked to Parkinson's disease in all of the mice and measured dopamine levels again. The mice treated with polyphenols appeared to have been protected against toxic elements that may be linked to this disease.
Other studies in animals show that the polyphenols in green tea also help the brain and body maintain a steady supply of their chief fuel, glucose. Polyphenols influence glucose metabolism in part by helping the body regulate sensitivity to the hormone insulin. Compounds in green tea enhance insulin sensitivity, keeping the brain running smoothly on steady levels of glucose.
Tannins are another important set of compounds found in green tea. They too have also been shown to have brain boosting benefits: they may prevent the brain damage that occurs after strokes and other brain injuries.
Tannins, like many other beneficial substances in plants, are natural compounds produced by tea leaves in the wild to keep animals from devouring the growing plants. It now turns out that one of the tannins found in tea leaves, gallotannin, helps the body's own DNA repair system and keeps it working in the brain despite damage that occurs during stroke.
Under normal conditions, the DNA repair system in the brain goes into overdrive in the aftermath of stroke, and instead of helping to repair brain cells it causes them to die. But researchers at the University of California at San Francisco found that if they surround injured neurons with the gallotannin found in green tea, it is highly effective in preventing neuron death.
This doesn't necessarily mean that consuming large amounts of green tea would be sufficient to repair brain damage in stroke victims. The amount of gallotannins found in green tea is negligible compared to the large amount used in the study.
Acetyl-l-carnitine (also spelled as acetyl l-carnitine, or l-acetyl-l-carnitine) and carnitine play several important roles in the human body. These nutrients shuttle acetyl groups and fatty acids into mitochondria for energy production.
Without carnitine, fatty acids cannot easily enter into mitochondria. The acetyl group of acetyl l carnitine is used to form acetyl-CoA, the most important intermediary in the generation of energy from amino acids, fats, and carbohydrates. Therefore, acetyl l carnitine serves as an energy reservoir of acetyl groups and both acetyl-l-carnitine and carnitine help improve energy production. The acetyl group is also used to make the important brain chemical acetylcholine. Some studies suggest that perhaps acetyl l carnitine can even act as a neurotransmitter itself. This name of this nutrient is sometimes abbreviated as ALC or ALCAR.
Those who take carnitine pills, usually for energy or weight loss, notice an increase in physical energy, but not as much mental energy. Phosphatidyl choline (PC) is a fat-soluble substance known as a phospholipid. Phospholipids are essential components of cell membranes. Phosphatidylcholine's role in the maintenance of cell membrane integrity is vital to all of the basic biological processes: information flow, intracellular communication, and bioenergetics. The commercial term for PC is lecithin. When people refer to lecithin they are usually referring to supplements high in phosphatidyl choline. Supplements labeled as lecithin may contain from 10 to 20 PC. However, pure PC supplements are generally labeled as phosphatidylcholine.
In addition to providing choline needed for cell membrane integrity, PC is also an essential component of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter required for normal brain activity. Although the human body can synthesize choline, additional amounts from the diet are considered essential under certain circumstances. Consequently, PC has been employed by researchers in a number of studies for use in connection with various neurological and psychiatric disorders. However, these studies did not draw any conclusive results regarding PC supplementation.
Huperzine A is a potent chemical derived from a particular type of club moss ( Huperzia serrata [Thumb] Trev.). Like caffeine and cocaine, huperzine A is a medicinally active, plant-derived chemical that belongs to the class known as alkaloids. It was first isolated in 1948 by Chinese scientists.
Studies in animals suggested that it could improve memory skills. These finding led to human trials and the subsequent marketing of the huperzine A as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and related conditions. It is also used as a “brain booster” for enhancing memory and mental function.
Huperzine A inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (uh-SEE-tul-co-lin-ES-ter-ase). This enzyme breaks down acetylcholine, a substance that plays an important role in mental function. When the enzyme that breaks it down is inhibited, acetylcholine levels in the brain tend to rise.
Drugs that inhibit acetylcholinesterase (such as tacrine and donepezil) improve memory and mental functioning in people with Alzheimer's and other severe conditions. The research on huperzine A indicates that it works in much the same way.
The chemical action of huperzine A is very precise and specific. It "fits" into a niche on the enzyme where acetylcholine is supposed to attach. Because huperzine A is in the way, the enzyme can't grab and destroy acetylcholine.
