What are the Benefits?

Probiotic 10 offers advanced support for:

• Digestive & Intestinal Health†

• Healthy Immune Function†

Supporting intestinal health may be a contributing factor to immune health.† Digestion is a complex process, transforming the food we eat into energy, while ridding our system of waste and toxins. Since approximately 70% of immune cells are located in the gastrointestinal system, gut health is not only important to digestion but is also involved in the overall performance of the immune system.† Probiotics not only support microbial balance of healthy intestinal flora, but assist in the body’s natural digestive process, and contribute to immune function.† Probiotics also help support the absorption of nutrients.†

What are Probiotics?

Probiotics are live microorganisms that contribute to human health.† In fact the word 'probiotic' is derived from the Greek term 'biotikos' and may be literally translated as 'for life'. Probiotics are derived from the human microbiome, a vast community of microorganisms that inhabit the human body. Made up primarily of bacteria, the microbiome lives with us in a symbiotic relationship, meaning that both the human host and the microbiome benefit.

These commensal microorganisms reside on parts of our bodies that are exposed to the environment, including our skin, eyes, mouths, digestive tracts and urinary tracts. It’s been estimated that the number of bacterial cells making up the microbiome outnumber our own cells by about 10 to 1!2 The vast majority are innocent bystanders looking for a place to live, but they also contribute to the overall functioning of our bodies.

Not all Probiotics are Created Equal

Probiotics can provide health and wellness benefits by balancing the microbiome and contibuting to its functions.† But it’s important to understand that not all probiotics are created equal. There are many different probiotics, each with specific benefits depending on which body systems are affected.†

How Much Do I Need?

Recommended dosages of probiotics differ from other supplements. In addition to milligram (mg) amounts, probiotics are also often measured according to the number of live microorganisms, called colony forming units or CFU. The dose of a probiotic depends on its clinically studied health benefits, but generally efficacious doses are 1 billion CFU or higher. Some products will list the CFU as the amount guaranteed “at time of manufacture”.

This is because some probiotics are less hardy than others when stored at room temperature and chilled storage can maximize the number of live microorganisms after opening. Other products list the counts as guaranteed through an expiration date if stored according to package directions. While dietary supplements can provide relatively higher doses of probiotics, additional amounts can also be ingested in some everyday foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, miso and kim chi. Probiotic microorganisms are used to ferment these foods, giving them their characteristic tangy flavors.
